Reflexion - Living A Life That Matters

Reflexion - Living A Life That Matters

By Yvonne Junor

What we value impacts our well-being. Our values can be divided into extrinsic and intrinsic. Extrinsic values are external, like wanting the big house, an expensive car, the high status career or a certain image. Intrinsic values include wanting to be good to the environment, being pro-social, wanting spiritual growth or being a good neighbour.

So the more time you spend pursuing extrinsic values, the less time you have in your life for pursuing intrinsic values. This matters because over emphasis on extrinsic values are linked with negative mental health and substance abuse disorder. However, intrinsic values are linked with the well-being we want. Extrinsic values are activated on social media and other forms of media, we hear these messages day in day our in our capitalistic culture telling us that you need these things to matter.

People who live and organise their lives with intrinsic values they are more likely living a life that matters. They feel valued by people and knowing they add meangful value back.

My Realisations:

When I reflected on my values, it made me appreciate how important it is for me to have a healthy balance and perspective of my extrinsic and intrinsic values.
