Reflexion - The Age Of Wisdom
Being 65 years old this brings me into the ‘retiring’ stage of my life. It brings a range of reactions, some people find the prospect of retiring quite confronting. There may be a sense of a loss of identity or other concerns.
Jane Fonda (88) defines her ‘final act’ (beginning at age 60) as ‘a conscious intentional effort to live without regret, focusing on forgiveness, self-acceptance, and staying active despite past health battles’. She aims to avoid the regrets she witnessed with her father Henry Fonda, by embracing bravery and nurturing relationships. I commend the philosophy she espouses about living in this ‘final act’ of her life, we can all learn from this. She lives ‘intentionally’ with purpose, actively working to forgive herself and others to avoid dying with regrets, maintaining a healthy lifestyle is her highest priority and discovers her own inner strength and courage. I applaud this outlook on life and try my best to emulate these excellent examples of aging well.
I have found my retirement to be some of the most fulfilling years of my life. I acknowledge the many blessings I have that contribute to this, however, there have been many deliberate decisions I have made to make this a fulfilling time. Most importantly, my health and relationships come first. In my sixties, I have retrained into a different career, maintain a beautiful garden, travelled, written my memoir, started my own business, seek guidance from a business mentor and love rides on my electric bike. Life is growing and ever expanding.
Keep dreaming and fulfilling your dreams, even in your later stages of life, keep an open mind set about your life choices. Being older doesn’t necessarily mean your life is shrinking. We can still have ambition to search and fulfill the meaning of our lives whatever the stage we are at.
